In the fall of 1998 a group of business people from Southeast Georgia assembled to discuss a perceived need of additional banking services in the area. The group was particularly concerned that many of the locally owned and managed banks had been sold to large regional banks, resulting in less local input into credit decisions and business attitude. There was but one locally owned bank in Camden County and none in Brantley County.

The organizers concluded that Southeast Georgia has an abundance of natural resources including the Satilla River which flows through both Camden and Brantley County. The river flows through and by countless acres of forest and woodlands. It offers excellent fishing to area residents. It delivers fresh, clean, pure water as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The organizers chose the name Satilla Community Bank. Satilla is an aboration of St. Illa, which was the first name given the river by Spanish explorers.

A decision was made to apply for a banking charter from the Department of Banking and Finance, State of Georgia, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The application was unique for it depicted a business plan that includes two banks, one in St. Marys and another in Nahunta, Georgia. Approval was granted and the organizers began the task of selling common stock to the local public to capitalize the bank. After the stock sale was completed, plans were developed and construction began in mid 2001 for both bank buildings.

With construction complete, the Satilla Community Bank was opened in November, 2001. The Nahunta branch opened in January 2002. Both offices have enjoyed excellent initial success. The Directors, Management, and the Staff are committed to providing banking services at competitive prices by well trained professional bankers. Thus we have adopted our motto,

The Nahunta branch was sold in Summer of 2008.
